Havana Club and Skepta pay deuces to their roots
Skepat x Havana Club
Once again, Skepta and Havana Club join forces. For the second time, the two partners are working together and are now launching a jointly designed bottle of the famous rum.
The bottle pays homage to Skepta’s Nigerian roots with its unconventional design. Let’s take a look!
Skepta for Yoruba Culture
The design of the bottle draws on both Nigerian Yoruba culture and Cuban culture. Native textiles like Adire were used as decoration and various landmarks and indigenous animals are depicted. Cowrie shells, which have an important meaning in both cultures, frame the design.
“This Havana Club 7 bottle honors my roots. It traces the migration of Yoruba culture from Africa to Cuba and back again. Inspired by the region of my chieftainship in Ogun State Nigeria, it celebrates inner strength and the journeys that make us great.”
As part of the campaign, Skepta previously traveled to Nigeria with Havana Club and visited his mother’s home village in order to connect with his roots. The UK artist also visited Ile Ife, the birthplace of the Yoruba people. They documented the journey in a short video.
Another part of the campaign is an initiative to strengthen small family businesses in London that the Corona pandemic has hit. Small corner stores and supermarkets will receive exclusive deliveries of the new bottle before it is distributed online.
Giving his home community a little head start.
The retired Skepta?
Actually, Skepta had recently announced his intention to retire from rap. This Friday, a new EP will be released, with previously recorded tracks and a few already finished features are still to follow. But after that it’s supposed to be over.
If you think this means Skepta will spend the rest of his days drinking rum in Lagos, you couldn’t be more wrong.
The grime legend will probably not be able to rest that easy. After all, he recently launched his next collaboration with Nike. The football shoe SK Phantom.
Shortly after, he launched a freestyle contest with Diesel, where artists could win a rap coaching from him.
This hardly sounds like a pension.
